Earthy Chic

Happy Hump Day everyone!!  We are almost through with another work week!  Today's oufit post represents me wholeheartedly.   I love love love earthtone colorways!  For this look, I paired basic greens/browns and made them playful. What I love most are my kelly green skinny jeans and multi-colored pumps. They add a bit of spice to this outfit.  As much as I adore dressing up for events, cute and casual wear is my preference.  More frequently will we begin seeing earth tone hues as we approach the fall season; however, there is no rule against wearing such colors during summer months :)

My hair style is a twist out with a high puff and bangs. This is my go to style for those "lazy days."  Since I'm getting a bit bored with this look, I will try and emulate Lazy Day Hairstyles as shown by SimplYounique-my favorite natural hair vlogger. (click here to view).

A Leap Of Style-Karissa Lindsay

7/15/2013

Karissa Lindsay is definitely a name to remember!  Ms. Lindsay is the owner/designer of A Leap Of Style.  I recently had the opportunity to model for Karissa at an event hosted by Nappy Love Houston (a meet up group for Houston naturalistas).  Immediately, I was drawn to the fabulous line, especially the turquoise shorts I wore.

About Karissa:

Karissa Lindsay fell in love with printed clothing while in middle school.  In fact, her first design was a pair of cloud printed pants that made quite the impression at her locker their first day out. From there,  a star was born...well not exactly. Karissa strayed from her dream of being a designer for years, but after gaining a renewed sense of purpose brought on by her growing relationship with Christ, she took a leap of faith and created a small collection of uniquely printed apparel. This collection of shorts, skirts, pants, and dresses are for the woman looking to make a bold statement in her wardrobe. Each piece speaks to this Houston-based designer's love of ethnic prints, from the sari fabrics of India to the Ankara wax prints native to West African countries. The styles are fresh with the occasional nod to vintage styling, but the shapes are always simple to allow the prints to do the talking. Each piece is designed to enhance the female figure and evoke a sense of bold "I-too-can-take-on-the-world" confidence in the wearer.

You can find more of Karissa's designs on Etsy. Let's show her some support!

Below are pictures from the Pamper Me Beautiful event which showcased A Leap Of Style fashion.

WORK!
Happy Wednesday all! Are you still recovering from the holiday weekend like me? lol It's always hard returning to work
after enjoying time with family and friends! My weekdays not only consist of long work hours, but also social events right
after.  For those extra long days, I opt to wear outfits I can easily transform.  My ootd (outfit of the day) consists of a
simple bodycon dress.  The first few images show how I'd wear the dress during work hours.  I layered the burnt orange
dress with a black blazer.  My accents are silver/black jewelry, hounds tooth flats, and a two-toned purse.

PLAY!
This is how I'd wear the dress for my after 5 look.  As you can see, I removed the blazer, necklace, and flats.  I accented the
look with a polka dot scarf, closed-toe sandal like heels, and my two-toned purse.  Talk about versatility!  Like I always say, it doesn't take much to make a simple outfit pop!

My hair is blown out with a low, messy side bun style.

Outfit Details Here:

Dress: H & M
Blazer: Forever XXI
Shoes: Rampage (both flats & heels)
Purse: Dooney & Bourke (old)
Jewelry: New York & Company (necklace)/Retailers Unknown (all other accessories)
Sunglasses: Union Bay (Ross)

Picture
Happy Monday everyone!!  So, this is my update on trying to emulate one of the Design Essentials summer styles.  I attempted to recreate the Round About Twistout & Updo, but with this hot and humid Texas weather, my style ended up being a Frohawk  (minus the mini bantu knots).  These styles are extremely simple and perfect for summer time!

Make certain you revisit the Design Essentials Summer Styles post for more hair care and summer style info.

Until next time....

Patriotism With Style

Happy Pre-Independence Day!!!  I'm sure most of you are going to enjoy time with family and friends like I will!  Down here in Houston, the temperature has been 90+ degrees!  My attire is appropriate for this weather and I'm representing the red, white, & blue!  You're probably thinking: "if it's so hot, why is she wearing a scarf?" lol This infinity scarf is very light-weight.  I'm usually cold, so for me, it's the perfect addition to my ensemble.

I love the versitility/comfort of maxi dresses.  I wear them year around, but  mostly during summer months. The dress stands out from the multi-colored scarf.  This look is a great way to showcase your holiday spirit with a fashionable twist!

My hair style is a simple high puff with bangs.  This is the easiest to create when I don't feel like dealing with the natural. #lazy days....

Outfit Details Here:

Dress: Old Navy
Flip Flops: Retailer Unknown (old)
Scarf: Sam Moon
Purse:  Express
Jewelry:  Forever XXI

Are you showing patriotism with style too? Let's discuss....

Deshonica on Rocking Out with a Bantu Knot Frohawk- An easy way to refresh a twist-out

  • Apply Design Essentials® Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion as a moisturizer first
  • Part hair into big chunks and two-strand twist hair
  • Then add Design Essentials® Natural Twist & Set Setting Lotion and create bantu knots (apply bantu knots only on both sides of the head)
  • Gather the hair in the middle and draw the hair up using a soft brush to create the frohawk
  • Secure hair with bobby pins and crisscross them for a tighter hold
  • Use a comb to create volume in the fro and make sure to tease the hair in one direction to avoid tangling

Deshonica on a Round About Twist Out & Updo
  • Twist hair with Design Essentials® Natural Twist and Set Setting Lotion, twisting hair in big sections (about 3 different sections for hair that is shoulder length)
  • T-shirt blot hair to prevent dripping and frizziness
  • Sit  under the dryer for  5 to 10 minutes to let product set
  • Separate curls by rubbing a small amount of  Design Essentials® Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion on hands, then continue to separate hair
  • To achieve fullness, take a comb and gently pull through the roots
  • Once the twists start to get old, gather the hair to the top of your head and draw the hair up using a soft brush
  • Secure hair with bobby pins crisscrossing them, down, up, down, up to securely position the hair into a neat updo

All of the above mentioned Design Essentials® Natural products may be purchased at your local Sally Beauty Supply, Walgreens, ULTA and select beauty & barber supply stores.  You may also purchase these products from your local salon or online at www.DesignEssentials.com.

Basic Black & Bold Accents

6/27/2013

Happy Thursday everyone!! One more work day! Yay!! lol Most of my work attire consists of comfortable clothing and flats. I often wear basic colors and jewelry accents.  One of my favoirite basics is black. You can never go wrong with black!  It is the easiest color to accessorize.  I took a simple tunic dress and made it stand out with my bold statement pieces.  My accessories include: a choker necklace, armour cuff gladitor bracelet, leopard print purse, and red pumps.

My mom purchased the bracelet for me a while back as a gift.  Doesn't she have great taste? She is the reason I adore fashion.  As a kid, I always played in her make-up and clothing/accessories.  lol  Shouts out to my Mommy  the Diva!!!!

To reiterate, black can be easily accented.  If ever you're in a "I need a quick fashionable look" predicament,  go to your basic black and hook it up!

My hair is in a twist out, which is my usual  "go to" style.  I combined Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Style Milk and Miss Jessie's Baby Butter Creme.  Both items can be purchased at Target.

Outfit Details Here:

Tunic Dress:  New York & Company
Shoes: Retailer Unknown (old)
Purse: New York & Company
Jewelry: Retailers Unknown (old)/bracelet (gift)

High-Low Flow

6/20/2013

What can I say, except I LOVE THIS DRESS!!  It's fun, playful, and a bit flirtatious.  Dresses like this instantly bring the look together without much effort.  Again, for those lazy days, easy outfits are a must! The high-low dress quickly became a hit when it debuted last year.  So far, it's still a popular trend that may be around for another year or two. The unique hemline makes this style very versatile, meaning, you can dress it up or down.  I chose the casual route with my wedge heels.  My accents are gold and beige accessories. The bendable snake necklace is my BOLD statement piece!  It can be shaped however I want.

My hair style is a simple high puff with bangs.  This is the easiest to create when I don't feel like dealing with the natural. #lazy days....

Outfit Details Here:

Dress: Trend Mall
Wedge Heels: Burlington Coat Factory
Handbag: Dooney & Bourke (old gift)
Jewelry: Retailer(s) Unknown (old)
Sunglasses: Union Bay (Ross)

Are you sporting the high-low trend too? Let's discuss.....

A Hint of Mint...

6/13/2013

This summer, one of the top color trends is mint green.   It is just about everywhere you look.  It's seen in home decor as well as fashion.  I love how soft and subtle the color is.  I especially love my top!  The gray shoulder patches accents the  black.  This look is appropriate for both work and play.  I completed the outfit with my favorite gray purse (it's limp in the picture since there's nothing in it-lol) and silver jewelry.  I also chose a soft lip color.  Tidbit: My lip color is actually lip liner.  I used my Mac Magenta lip liner and $2 gloss to assist with applying.  I was advised by a Mac consultant that lip liner lasts longer than most lipsticks.  You can use it in the place of lipstick.

My hair is in a twist out, which is my usual  "go to" style.  I combined Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Style Milk and Miss Jessie's Baby Butter Creme.  Both items can be purchased at Target.

Refer to the Achieved Looks post to see how my hair responds with different products.

Tamed Animal Prints

I just love wearing cute dresses!  In today's post, I'm sporting my leopard print baby doll dress, which is one of my favorites!!  The crew neck  adds innocence to the look.  This outfit can be dressed up with the right heels or down with cute flats.  As you can see, I decided to make it more of an after 5 look with my red ankle strap pumps.  I purchased these shoes years ago for a friend's wedding and they still look good!  I also accented my look with a red flower hair accessory.  It doesn't take much to make a simple dress stand out! When I'm having those lazy days, I choose outfits that do not require much work, only a few accents.

My hair is in a twist out, which is my usual  "go to" style. I used a mixture of Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Style Milk and Miss Jessie's Baby Butter Creme.  Both items can be purchased at Target.

Outfit Details Here:

Dress: Ross
Shoes: Retailer Unknown (old)
Clutch: Forever XXI
Jewelry: Retailer(s) Unknown
Hair Flower: Dollar Tree

What are some of your outfits that require little to no accessorizing?  Feel free to comment!
